Picking up life's pieces

I am writing on the 11-month anniversary of Linda’s death. February 18 will bring the one year anniversary. Louis and I are still figuring out how we will mark that day when our lives were shattered. We have spent the intervening months putting our lives back together, knowing that our family will never be the same. I walked out of the hospital room where Linda died as a widower—a new and painful identity. I became a single parent, a single man, and I had to change my work schedule to fit this new reality. I am grateful to all of the people who cooperated by adapting to these necessary changes—particularly, my congregations. Most of all, I am grateful to Louis, my younger son, who has been alone with the dog (as well as a few of his friends) while I have been away, enabling me to continue working as an itinerant minister. John was able to accept an amazing offer for an internship last summer because he wasn’t feeling that he had to be home for what could be “Linda’s last summer.” (Even though we had nearly six years of wondering whether each holiday, birthday or anniversary would be “the last,” we were still devastated when she died.) So, the house where four of us lived together the previous summer housed only two of us for most of this past year. There is no denying that it was lonely, at times. Simultaneously, it was rewarding to see John launched on the trajectory of his career. Within a couple of months, we will know where Louis will attend college, and a few more pieces of the Sears Family Puzzle will begin fitting together.

Planning... it's more than a committee

My week with you in December was an eye-opening experience. It was the only time this church year when I was able to operate on my “normal” schedule of arriving on a Saturday, preaching Sunday, staying through the week, and then driving back to Ithaca following the second Sunday’s service. By the time that I walked into Palmer Street for my second service, it was apparent to me, just how much we’ve both missed out on with this year’s abbreviated schedule. It was necessary this year because I have been single parenting. If things go according to my own personal plan, I will be far more accessible next year. Once Louis goes off to college, it is highly likely that the bulk of my commuting will be from Montreal rather than Ithaca.
