Our Beliefs Welcome to Unitarian Universalism

OUR MISSION:

The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Plattsburgh (UUFP) is to provide for a religious community where freedom of worship, speech and thought are welcomed, protected and fostered. We affirm and encourage, spiritual and intellectual growth, and the use of the democratic process. We support actions and activities that benefit the environment, embrace human diversity, and provide for the common good.

OUR SHARED VISION:

The members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship strive to:

1. Sustain an inclusive, open, free and safe spiritual and religious community that nurtures a sense of belonging among its members.
2. Be acknowledged in the greater Plattsburgh area as an inclusive community committed to good works and social justice.
3. Provide spiritual, religious and ethically focused services and programs that challenge and support us to grow together in community.
4. Provide spiritual, religious and ethically focused services and programs that challenge and support each of us to grow as individuals.
5. Provide an exemplary religious education program for adults and children.
6. Provide a place of worship that is physically accessible, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
7. Live as a community and as individuals in all ways consistent with UU Principles and values.

Our faith, Unitarian Universalism, is a spiritually alive and justice-centered religion. Unitarian Universalists search for truth along many paths. Instead of centering our religion on specific beliefs, we gather around shared moral values that include the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

If you were to visit our Fellowship, you would find our religious observances to be familiar. Our Fellowship has regular worship services (Sunday at 10:00 AM) facilitated by guest ministers, presenters or by members of our congregation, religious education classes for our children, religious music, study groups, community work, and much more.

Please read through the Visitors pages of the Unitarian Universalist Association to learn more about our faith and our religious community.

This video, created by a Unitarian Minister and her helpful husband gives solid introduction to the UU Faith in just a few minutes.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has created this 10 minute long introduction to the UU Faith, as well.
  Sunday Services

Sunday Services Our Sunday Services are thought-inspiring and open to all.
  Religious Education

Religious Education [We come together] not to stamp our minds irresistibly on others but to
stir up their own;
not to make them see with our eyes, but to look inquiringly and steadily
with their own;
not to form outward regularity, but touch inward springs;
not to impose religion on them in the form of arbitrary rules, but to
awaken the conscience, the moral discernment, so that they may
discern and approve for themselves what is everlasting, right and
good. - William Ellery Channing

Religious education/experience for children at UUFP is multi-faceted. We hope to encourage and support religious and ethical growth through a wide variety of experiences in a warm and nurturing environment. We will work to accomplish our goals through many different approaches adapting to childrens needs and with the belief that each child builds his or her own understanding of the world.

Goals:

1. Build a multi-generational community.
2. Develop a sustaining faith.
3. Live Unitarian Universalist Principles.
4. Understand other religions.
5. Experience reverence.

Childrens Time: During each Sunday Service a portion of the service is dedicated to and intergenerational experience we call childrens time. This time helps connects the adults and the children in the congregation with a shared experience.

Intergenerational Services: Each year the childrens RE committee collaborates with the Sunday Services committee to provide Sunday Services that are intergenerational. These include: Water Communion (ingathering in September), Remembrance Day (honoring our ancestors in October), Mitten Tree Sunday (learning to care for others in December), Drama Performance (building intergenerational community in March), Earth Day (honoring the planet in April), Flower Communion (appreciating beauty in diversity in June).

Nursery: Children birth to about 3 years old are provided loving care in our nursery located downstairs in the Palmer St. building. Ali Armstrong-Zantana is our nursery care leader. Parents may join her in the nursery as needed.

Pre-school: Children ages 3 years to about 5 years have a designated space at our Elm St. facility.

At times during the Fellowship year we will work in multi-age groups, at other times we will divide into interest groups and sometimes we will divide by age. The content of our programming, drawn from a variety of sources, is determined by our Religious Education Committee with input from the entire congregation. Topics for the 2008-09 year include: an introduction to Judaism, building connections and understandings with older people, developing compassion and providing service, caring for the environment and learning to live the UU principles.

Please contact Kris Lutters, Director of Religious Education, for further information, conversation or an appointment to discuss the ethical and religious development of your children. 518-563-5224 (message), klutters@plattscsd.org, email is the best way to make an initial contact. Id love to talk to you if you are considering joining us.
